Repentance for Mercy

We should set our faces unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes: and we should pray unto the LORD our God, and make our confessions, and say, O Lord, the great and dreadful God, keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love you, and to them that keep your commandments.

We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly, and have rebelled, even by departing from your precepts and from your judgments. Neither have we hearkened unto your prophets who have spoken in your name to our leaders, our teachers, and our elders, and to all the people of Nigeria.  Lord, righteousness belongs to you, but unto us confusion of faces, as at this day; to the men of Lagos, and to the inhabitants of Abuja, and unto all Nigeria, that are near, and that are far off, through all the countries where you have driven Nigerians, because of our trespass that we have trespassed against you.

Lord, to us belongs confusion of face, to our leaders, to our teachers, and to our elders, because we have sinned against you.  To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgiveness, though we have rebelled against you.  Neither have we obeyed the voice of the LORD our God, to walk in your laws, which you set before us by your messengers.  Indeed, all Nigeria has transgressed your law, even by departing, that we might not obey your voice; therefore the curse is poured upon us, and the oath that is written in the laws you have given, because we have sinned against you.

O LORD, you have confirmed your words, which you spake against us, and against our teachers, by bringing upon us a great evil: for under the whole heaven has not been done as has been done upon Nigeria.  As it is written in the laws you have given, all this evil is come upon us: yet we have not made our prayer before the LORD our God, that we might turn from our iniquities, and understand the truth. Therefore has the LORD watched upon the evil, and brought it upon us: for the LORD our God is righteous in all his works which he does: for we obeyed not his voice.  Now, O LORD our God, that hast brought our people out of destitution by a mighty hand; we have sinned, we have done wickedly.

O Lord, according to all your righteousness, we implore you to let your anger and your fury be turned away from Nigeria: because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Abuja and Nigeria has become a reproach to all the countries that are about us.  Now therefore, O our God, hear the prayer of your servants, and our supplications, and cause your face to shine upon our country that is desolate, for your sake. O our God, incline your ear, and hear; open your eyes, and behold our desolation. For we do not present our supplications before you on account of our righteousness, but because of your great mercies. O Lord, hear; O Lord, forgive; O Lord, defer not, for your own sake, O my God, for our country Nigeria and Nigerians who are called by your name. Amen.
